How we choose

We don't test products ourselves. We bring together independent tests, official information and long-term owner feedback, find where they agree, and pick a few choices that are good enough for most people. Every page lists its sources and the date we last checked.

Where our facts come from

• Tested reviews: reviewers who test products hands-on and publish the results, such as RTINGS and Outdoor Gear Lab. In taste-driven categories like fragrance, blind tests and community ratings take their place.
• Official sources: brand sites and government agencies, for models, specs, warranties and recalls.
• Long-term owners: forums where owners discuss products over months and years.

We don't use untested "top 10" lists, sponsored content or AI-written roundups.

What a brand needs to make the list

• Independent recommendations: one is enough for a long-established, widely known brand; anyone else needs two, including at least one tested review (or, in taste-driven categories, a blind test or community ratings).
• No unresolved serious problems in the last two years, such as recalls, safety issues or data breaches. Big names are held to this too.
• Easy to buy in the US.

We show up to three brands per category. If there aren't three good ones, we show fewer. One is marked Safe pick: the one most people can start with.

What a product needs

Each product is still sold in the US and has been tested by at least one trusted source, with a positive overall verdict and no clear problems. We show up to three per brand, covering different needs and budgets.

Keeping it current

• Prices are shown as typical ranges, not exact prices.
• We check every link every three days and review every category every three months.
• Reviews more than a year old count as dated, and we look for newer ones. When a newer model is out but not yet tested, we keep the tested one and say so.
• Recalls, discontinued products and safety issues are updated as soon as we learn about them.

Independence

Advertisers can buy a clearly labeled space below the picks. They can never buy a place in the picks.

How the research is done

Research is assisted by AI, and every category is checked by a person before it goes live.
